How do we teach maths at Tyssen?

At Tyssen we are using Hackney Approach to Assessment Fundamentals to assess the children’s progress against the new National Curriculum. We are aiming for most children to be working within the fundamental targets for their year group. You can view the fundamentals for each year group here.

Five of the fundamentals relate to the children ‘being a mathematician’, these targets focus on fluency, reasoning, communication, reflection and problem solving. We embed these targets into our daily maths lessons. Through maths, our aim is to teach the children to be creative thinkers and problem –solvers, encouraging the children to think for themselves.
We want to develop core skills in children to enable them to apply maths outside the classroom.

This Spring term we have introduced a new scheme of work for maths, Abacus. This scheme is a unique maths toolkit that’s carefully crafted to inspire a genuine love of maths and help every child master the national curriculum.

How can you help your child at home?

It is critical that children have a key bank of number facts to draw on when they are tackling calculations; both written and mental. You can encourage your child to practise at home by logging on to different websites designed to help children to remember these key facts.
