Reading at Tyssen

Destination Reader

Destination Reader is an approach to teaching reading in KS2. The approach involves daily sessions incorporating whole class modelling prior to the children applying these skills through partner work and independent reading. Children deepen their understanding of the texts they read through the systematic use of a series of strategies and language stems. The approach encompasses the key principles of effective reading provision and fully meets the requirements of the National Curriculum by creating deep understanding of texts, developing oracy around reading and increasing children’s breadth of reading. Destination Reader also helps to build a culture of reading for pleasure and purpose.

The Reading Strategies explicitly taught are:

Asking Questions

Making Connections

Guided Reading

Children in KS1 take part in Guided Reading sessions where they complete a carousel of activities each week, related to a text levelled to their ability.

All children at Tyssen are encouraged to read every night for 15 minutes and record this in their Home Reader. Children can collect Reading Miles, a mile per book, and win special certificates and prizes for reaching, 25, 50, 75 and 100 books!

Bug Club

All children at Tyssen have a password which enables them to access an online library. Teachers will select appropriate books for them to read. Please encourage your child to do so! There are also comprehension activities linked to the book your child is reading, to test their comprehension skills.
